The 11th Birding Fair at Jaipur's Man Sagar Lake will be held on 8 and 9 February 08. It will be dedicated to Peacock, the National Bird of India, which is facing rough time for its survival owing to poaching (for feathers, meat also), and impact of pesticides over its feed...!
The Fair is sponsored by (i) INTACH, a national level organisation in India working for conservation of heritage for more than two decades, (ii) by Jal Mahal Resorts Pvt. Ltd (JMRPL), the company that has initiated multi-pronged actions to conserve Man Sagar lake (iii) World Pheasant Association – India, and (iv) Mrs. (Dr.) Rajkumari Williamson Jones from UK.
Following measures initiated by JMRPL, this water body of heritage
significance, located north of Jaipur, India, is now a much improved
habitat, attracting more and diverse species of birds.
The objective of the Fair is to conserve this lake and develop it
as a new bird park in India. Which is what is now taking shape.
The Tourism & Wildlife Society of India (TWSI), is the promoter
of this event, which is supported by Schools of Jaipur and a committed
section of citizens. What was a humble start eleven years ago, has
started yielding conservation gains …..
Can any one think of another lake in India being
restored at the eco-system approach? Kindly respond (to email : birdfair@birdfair.org)
to have your views and interact more actively on wetland conservation.
Globally – several global experts and organizations are in association
with this Fair, could be only such in India.
